About the artwork
Gyōsho Tōkaidō: Shōno
This print depicts a scene at the toiyaba in Shōno-shuku, present-day Suzuka, Mie Prefecture,
where travelers, porters, horses, and baggage were relayed from one post station to the next.
An attendant of a samurai presents documents to an official, while a post-station official examines what appears to be a certificate. Outside, porters are busy transferring baggage brought from the previous station onto a fresh horse, preparing it for the next stage of the journey.
The lively scene vividly captures the bustling everyday life along the Tōkaidō.
