Beyond the winding pines, tiled rooftops of samurai residences stretch into the distance, where Edo Castle and Mount Fuji quietly appear on the horizon. This view of Surugadai captures a striking sense of openness, looking out over the city toward Fuji.

Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji was Hiroshige’s first major series devoted to Mount Fuji and laid the foundation for his later landscape prints. It gently conveys the enduring presence of Fuji as it was experienced by the people of Edo.
