歌舞伎や物語に登場する大泥棒や侠客など、江戸で人気を集めたアウトローたちを描いた役者絵シリーズ「豊国漫画図絵」。
本作に描かれるのは、鬼薊清吉。鮮烈な赤を背景に、鋭い眼差しと、着物から大胆に覗く刺青がひときわ目を引きます。
通常の和紙よりも重厚な厚奉書を使用した特別な作品です。彫師は、幕末の名工と謳われた「彫竹」こと横川竹二郎。
役者の表情はもちろん、刺青や衣装の緻密な彫りにも名工の技が光る一枚です。
“Toyokuni Manga Zue” is a series of kabuki actor prints featuring outlaws who captured the imagination of Edo audiences—from notorious thieves to legendary street heroes.
This print features Oniazami Seikichi.
Against a striking red background, his piercing gaze and the bold tattoo revealed beneath his robe immediately stand out.
Printed on thick hosho paper using special techniques, this early impression shows beautiful woodgrain and rich, fine color. The blocks were masterfully carved by Yokokawa Takejiro, known as “Horitake, one of the leading woodblock carvers of the late Edo period.
From the actor’s expressive face to the intricate details of the tattoo and clothing, this print is a great showcase of a master carver’s skill.
