「豊国漫画図絵」は、歌舞伎や物語に登場する大泥棒や侠客など、江戸で人気を集めたアウトローたちを描いた役者絵シリーズです。
本作「おさらば小僧伝次」では、着物からのぞく刺青がひときわ目を引きます。
国貞ならではの役者絵の粋と、精緻な摺り、彫りの技が凝縮された一枚です。
彫師は、幕末の名工と謳われた「彫竹」こと横川竹次郎です。
“Toyokuni Manga Zue” is a series of kabuki actor prints featuring popular outlaws of the Edo period, including thieves and chivalrous rogues.
In this portrait of Osaraba Kozo Denji, the striking tattoo revealed beneath his kimono immediately catches the eye.
The print showcases Kunisada’s flair for actor portraits, along with the exceptional skill of the carvers and printers.
The carving was done by Yokokawa Takejiro, known as “Horitake,” one of the master carvers of the late Edo period.
