「福つくし」は、「ふく」という音を含む言葉を題材に、明治を生きる女性たちの姿を描いた美人画シリーズです。
題名にはローマ字表記も添えられており、明治期の西洋文化への関心と遊び心がうかがえます。
本図は「馥郁」。
梅の香が漂う亀戸天神の境内は、多くの人々で賑わっています。
美人たちはモダンな着物にショールをまとい、後方には山高帽をかぶった紳士の姿も見られるなど、和洋が入り交じる明治ならではの風俗が描かれています。
