「福つくし」は、「ふく」という音を含む言葉を題材に、明治を生きる女性たちの姿を描いた美人画シリーズです。
題名にはローマ字表記も添えられており、明治期の西洋文化への関心と遊び心がうかがえます。
本図は「福わらひ」。
福笑いに興じる女性たちの姿が描かれ、立ち姿の女性は羽子板を手にしています。
梅や福寿草の鉢、柱に飾られた正月飾りなどから、新春の晴れやかな雰囲気が感じられる一図です。
