The Fukutsukushi series portrays women of the Meiji period through themes based on words containing the sound fuku.
The Romanized title hints at both the curiosity about Western culture and the playful creativity of the Meiji era.
This print is titled Fuku Warai.
Women are shown enjoying a game of fukuwarai, a traditional New Year pastime, while the standing figure holds a hagoita paddle.
Plum blossoms, fukujuso flowers, and New Year decorations create a cheerful seasonal atmosphere.
