「福つくし」は、「ふく」という音を含む言葉を題材に、明治を生きる女性たちの姿を描いた美人画シリーズです。
題名にはローマ字表記も添えられており、明治期の西洋文化への関心と遊び心がうかがえます。
本図は「有ふく」。有ふくとは「裕福」のこと。
女性は膝に猫を乗せ、くつろいだ様子を見せています。室内には大きな金庫や西洋風の置時計も見られ、明治期の裕福な家庭の暮らしぶりをうかがわせる一図です。
The Fukutsukushi series portrays women of the Meiji period through themes based on words containing the sound fuku.
The Romanized title hints at both the curiosity about Western culture and the playful creativity of the Meiji era.
This print is titled Yufuku.
Yufuku means “prosperity” or “wealth.” A woman is shown relaxing with a cat on her lap. A large safe and a Western-style mantel clock can be seen in the room, offering a glimpse into the comfortable lifestyle of a wealthy Meiji-period household.
