「福つくし」は、「ふく」という音を含む言葉を題材に、明治を生きる女性たちの姿を描いた美人画シリーズです。
題名にはローマ字表記も添えられており、明治期の西洋文化への関心と遊び心がうかがえます。
本図は「子福者」。子福者とは、多くの子どもに恵まれた幸せな人のこと。
子どもたちは、読書やあやとりに夢中です。周囲にはでんでん太鼓や犬張子などのおもちゃも見られ、子どもたちの賑やかな日常がほほえましく描かれています。
The Fukutsukushi series portrays women of the Meiji period through themes based on words containing the sound fuku.
The Romanized title hints at both the curiosity about Western culture and the playful creativity of the Meiji era.
This print is titled Kofukusya. Kofukusha refers to someone blessed with many children.
The children are absorbed in reading and cat’s cradle, while toys such as a denden-daiko drum and an inuhariko papier-mache dog can be seen nearby, creating a charming scene of everyday life.
