「福つくし」は、「ふく」という音を含む言葉を題材に、明治を生きる女性たちの姿を描いた美人画シリーズです。

本図は「福寿草」。題名にはローマ字表記も添えられており、明治期の西洋文化への関心と遊び心がうかがえます。

縁日の夜店の植木売りを舞台に、福寿草や白梅を前に、品定めをする華やかな女性たちの姿が描かれています。

The Fukutsukushi series portrays women of the Meiji period through themes based on words containing the sound fuku.

This print is titled Fukujuso (Adonis). The Romanized title hints at both the curiosity about Western culture and the playful creativity of the Meiji era.

At a festival plant stall, elegantly dressed women are shown admiring and selecting pots of Adonis and white plum blossoms.
