「福つくし」は、「ふく」という音を含む言葉を題材に、明治を生きる女性たちの姿を描いた美人画シリーズです。
題名にはローマ字表記も添えられており、明治期の西洋文化への関心と遊び心がうかがえます。
本図は「霧ふく」。
女性が水を口に含み、着物に霧を吹きかけています。火熨斗（当時のアイロン）をかける前に行われた、日常的な作業のひとこまが描かれています。
庭先には鮮やかな紫陽花が咲き誇り、初夏の風情を感じさせる一図です。
The Fukutsukushi series portrays women of the Meiji period through themes based on words containing the sound fuku.
The Romanized title hints at both the curiosity about Western culture and the playful creativity of the Meiji era.
This print is titled Kirifuku.
A woman sprays a fine mist of water onto a kimono by holding water in her mouth. This everyday task was commonly performed before ironing garments with a hinoshi (a charcoal-heated iron).
Blooming hydrangeas in the garden add a touch of early summer charm to the scene.
