「福つくし」は、「ふく」という音を含む言葉を題材に、明治を生きる女性たちの姿を描いた美人画シリーズです。
題名にはローマ字表記も添えられており、明治期の西洋文化への関心と遊び心がうかがえます。
本図は「万民きふく」。
万民きふくとは、万民が喜び祝福する国家的行事を表します。
皇居を背景に、鳳凰飾りのついた天皇の馬車が歩みを進めています。
憲法発布の祝賀行事を思わせる、華やかな情景が描かれています。
The Fukutsukushi series portrays women of the Meiji period through themes based on words containing the sound fuku.
The Romanized title hints at both the curiosity about Western culture and the playful creativity of the Meiji era.

Banmin Kifuku refers to a national celebration embraced by the people. With the Imperial Palace in the background, the Emperor’s phoenix-adorned carriage proceeds through a festive crowd. The scene recalls the excitement of a major public celebration, possibly connected to the promulgation of the Meiji Constitution.
