「福つくし」は、「ふく」という音を含む言葉を題材に、明治を生きる女性たちの姿を描いた美人画シリーズです。本図は「ふぶく」。
題名にはローマ字表記も添えられており、明治期の西洋文化への関心と遊び心がうかがえます。
吹雪のなか、雪を積もらせた傘を差し、御高祖頭巾をかぶって道を行く女性の姿。
背後では犬が駆け回り、人力車も足早に行き交うなど、冬の街の慌ただしい情景が描かれています。
The Fukutsukushi series portrays women of the Meiji period through themes based on words containing the sound fuku.This print is titled Fubuku.
The Romanized title hints at both the curiosity about Western culture and the playful creativity of the Meiji era.
