「福つくし」は、「ふく」という音を含む言葉を題材に、明治を生きる女性たちの姿を描いた美人画シリーズです。
題名にはローマ字表記も添えられており、明治期の西洋文化への関心と遊び心がうかがえます。
本図は「ふく引」。
お正月に催された福引の様子が描かれています。大きな鏡餅が飾られ、招かれた女性たちが集う華やかな場面です。後方には福引の景品と思われる反物なども見え、新春の賑わいが感じられる一図です。
The Fukutsukushi series portrays women of the Meiji period through themes based on words containing the sound fuku.
The Romanized title hints at both the curiosity about Western culture and the playful creativity of the Meiji era.
This print is titled Fukubiki, and depicts a New Year’s lottery drawing.
A large kagami mochi is displayed, while elegantly dressed women gather around. Bolts of fabric, likely lottery prizes, can be seen in the background, creating a festive New Year atmosphere.
