「福つくし」は、「ふく」という音を含む言葉を題材に、明治を生きる女性たちの姿を描いた美人画シリーズです。本図は「ふく写」。
題名にはローマ字表記も添えられており、明治期の西洋文化への関心と遊び心がうかがえます。
室内では女性たちが画帖を眺めており、その傍らには福の神・恵比須様を描いた衝立が置かれています。
外はすでに夕闇に包まれ、離れの障子越しの灯りが庭をほのかに照らす、風情ある夜の情景が描かれています。
The Fukutsukushi series portrays women of the Meiji period through themes based on words containing the sound fuku. This print is titled Fukusha.
The Romanized title hints at both the curiosity about Western culture and the playful creativity of the Meiji era.
Inside, women are looking through a picture album, while a screen depicting Ebisu, the god of good fortune, can be seen nearby.
Outside, evening has fallen, and the light shining through the shoji screens softly illuminates the garden, creating a tranquil nighttime atmosphere.
