「福つくし」は、「ふく」という音を含む言葉を題材に、明治を生きる女性たちの姿を描いた美人画シリーズです。
題名にはローマ字表記も添えられており、明治期の西洋文化への関心と遊び心がうかがえます。
本図は「ふくろう」。
舞台は日本初の動物園である上野動物園。男の子の視線の先には「ふくろ」と記された札が掛けられ、その先にはフクロウの姿が見えます。
檻の中にはタンチョウヅルや鷹も描かれており、動物たちを興味深そうに眺める人々の姿からは、動物園見物を楽しむ様子がうかがえます。
The Fukutsukushi series portrays women of the Meiji period through themes based on words containing the sound fuku.
The Romanized title hints at both the curiosity about Western culture and the playful creativity of the Meiji era.
This print is titled Fukuro.
Set in Ueno Zoo, Japan’s first zoo, the print shows a young boy gazing toward a sign reading “fukuro,” which leads the viewer to an owl inside the enclosure.
Red-crowned cranes and hawks also appear in the cages, capturing the excitement and curiosity of a day spent at the zoo.
