「福つくし」は、「ふく」という音を含む言葉を題材に、明治を生きる女性たちの姿を描いた美人画シリーズです。本図は「ふくりん」。
題名にはローマ字表記も添えられており、明治期の西洋文化への関心と遊び心がうかがえます。
覆輪とは、花弁や葉の縁が異なる色で縁どられたものを指します。
舞台は植木屋「丸新」の庭先。色鮮やかな朝顔が並ぶなか、涼やかな装いの女性たちが集う、夏らしい一図です。
The Fukutsukushi series portrays women of the Meiji period through themes based on words containing the sound fuku. This print is titled Fukurin.
The Romanized title hints at both the curiosity about Western culture and the playful creativity of the Meiji era.
Fukurin refers to flowers or leaves whose edges are outlined in a contrasting color.
